Illuminatus – Wrath of The Lambs
May 19, 2008
Few things are certain in life, but a band who call themselves Illuminatus and release an album called ‘Wrath of The Lambs’ can only be Rock! On seeing what bands this Nottingham/international combo name-check(Anathema, Nightwish, Pink Floyd), it’s pretty much confirmed. Let the rock commence!
(four tracks later) Okay, I’m waiting… oh, this is ridiculous!
It’s like a sunken loaf: the ingredients are there (huge riffs, crushing rhythms, Julio Taylor Accept-esque vocals) but in the wrong quantities and it refuses to rise – ‘White Lies’ is over eight minutes and just doesn’t go anywhere. The heart is in the right place (“happy meals and hand grenades” anyone?) but the keys are too fixed, the beat too slow … wait a minute!
‘Fear/Control’ does everything that should have been done on the rest of the demo – key changes, aggressive apathy, time change – TEXTURE! More of this, less of everything else please.
