Latitude Festival – More Added To Music Lineup…

Posted by Adam Slinger On May - 26 - 2008

Latitude Festival is delighted to announce more wonderful music acts to the outstanding line up taking place in Henham Park this July. With a weekend that boasts everything from cutting edge music from around the globe to the best in contemporary creative arts, Latitude offers a truly unique festival experience!

Just announced for the Uncut Arena are Liverpool ’s finest psychedelic indie rockers, The Coral, who will be performing an acoustic set for Latitude Festival.

Since the release of the bands eponymous self-titled debut back in 2002 the band have progressed beyond the confines of the average guitar band and created an original sound all of their own. After making quite an impression on the American music critics with a successful set of tour dates alongside the Arctic Monkeys in September of last year and the release of their fifth album ‘Roots & Echoes’, the band have stated in various publications that they are now progressing into movie soundtrack work, essentially combining visuals with their music for an all round tingle of the senses.

Wild Beasts truly live up to their name with erratic soaring falsetto vocals and chiming guitars to create an eccentric, engaging performance. The four piece from Kendall via Leeds recently signed to Domino Records with whom they will release their hotly anticipated debut album ‘Limbo, Panto’ in June. The band will be playing on the Saturday joining the brilliant line up in the Uncut Arena.

With many stories to tell and seven albums to their name since their first jam together in 1997, Merseyside experimental group Clinic are one of the few groups of their genre (if you can really find one) to have stood the test of time and never compromise their sound based on the mainstream opinion. Having toured the UK with Arcade Fire in 2007 and remaining a key influence for many alternative artists, Clinic have always strived to be the people’s band they really are. Check out one of the most hard working bands around in the Sunrise Arena.

Lykke Li (real name Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson) has been a prominent figure in the Swedish indie scene since the national release of her debut album ‘Youth Novels’ in February of this year. Following a successful performance on Later With Jo ols Holland back in April, she has already left quite an impression on the UK music critics. Her music is a self-described mixture of soul, electro and sugar powdered pop which is sure to keep you dancing as much as it will bring a tear to your eye. Be sure not to miss the perfect complement to a Sunday afternoon at the Sunrise Arena this year.

Coming out of the North London scene like a brooding monster ready to lay its assault on the ears of the masses, the Sunrise Arena welcomes Animal Kingdom – a band with a somewhat darker edge. First impressions will leave you with a feeling that this is somewhere in between the subtlety of Elliott Smith and the swagger of the Rolling Stones, Animal Kingdom’s music is loaded with beautiful hooks and displays of song writing maturity far beyond their years.

Forever stuck in the same category as The White Stripes, it has always proven a tough mountain to climb for two piece bands to escape this tag. In recent days with the insurgence of acts like Latitude 2008 stars Crystal Castles and Patti Plinko & Her Boy, it seems that this is a problem slowly disappearing. Sheffield boy/girl duo Slow Club are fellow fighters of the two piece, loaded with sultry pop melodies and dance floor inspired beats that are an altogether different experience to the current crop of young Indie acts floating around at the moment. Quintessential pop with an everlasting charm, they are certainly one to put a smile on your face and heart on Friday’s Sunrise Arena.

Headlining this year’s event on the Obelisk Arena, Scottish art-rock heroes Franz Ferdinand play their only English festival show exclusively at Latitude on the Friday night; the majestic and soaring Icelandic post-rock outfit Sigur Rós head up Saturday’s line-up and New York titans Interpol close the arena on the Sunday with their unique brand of powerful and atmospheric inventive indie rock. Friday night over on the Uncut Arena will see an incredibly special performance from Africa’s funkiest band, the remarkable Amadou and Mariam and throughout the rest of the weekend the Obelisk and Uncut Arenas will host stunning performances from Nick Cave’s Grinderman, the beautiful poetry of Martha Wainwright, epic musicians The Mars Volta, the charming Death Cab for Cutie, the superb Elbow, legendary alt rockers The Breeders, legendary performer Julian Cope and grime, hip-hop, electro pop queen, M.I.A.

Boasting four Music Arenas, the Obelisk, Uncut, Sunrise and The Lake Stage span a wide range of genres and music hand-picked especially for the festival; bands and artists are chosen with the essence of Latitude in mind. More established bands play in harmony alongside the freshest new acts and with so much more to be announced – it only gets better!

Latitude Festival – Yet More Acts On The Roster

Posted by Rob Wright On May - 23 - 2008

Latitude Music Festival

Another day, another slew of additions to what is quickly becoming one hell of a line-up for Latitude this year – and not a hint of Jay-Z.

Coming in on the Obelisk (surely no reference to Pyramid) arena are New York’s Nada Surf and Murder By Death. Nada Surf have been making ‘beautiful’ music since their seminal debut, ‘High/Low,’ in 1996 and have been touring like relentless rock-hounds ever since. Following the release of ‘Lucky’ this year, they aim to conquer the fields of Southwold and win over the hearts and minds of a more than a few new fans.

Murder By Death from Bloomington, Indiana will be bringing the brooding with their dark, blue grass tinged American Gothic rock and roll. Expect something as boozy, unflinching and swaggering as an uncensored episode of Deadwood with music. Like ‘Once More With Feeling,’ but with more swears.

Joining the Uncut stage (not a reference to religious preference BTW) line-up are a trio of toubadours: House Of Love, Gravenhurst and Heloise & The Savoir Faire. House Of Love made a surprisingly convincing comeback in 2005 with album Days Run Away and they have been retaking England and Europe like some kind of melodic Risk enthusiast ever since. One can only hope that the sun ‘Sh-sh-sh-shines on” for their set. Sorry.

Bristol’s Gravenhurst having joined Warp’s increasingly eclectic line-up will now be joining Latitude’s increasingly eclectic line-up. Expect atmosphere. Expect darkness. Expect me to be there wearing something wintry in the sunshine.

Three things you should know about Heloise… Electro-punk; Graham Norton; Elijah Woods. Bringing glamour, disco and electro to the party, you can be fairly certain their set will be fun, fun, fun. If you like that sort of thing. Which I do. Sometimes.

At the Sunrise stage, we have have a six-pack of new talent itching to entertain you: Broken Records, a year old and already making waves; Anya Marina, she’s on Grey’s Anatomy; the mysterious Billy the Kid; The Beggars, taking it back to 1990; Thomas Tantrum, strop-free since 2003 and Hold Fire; in summary, summery pop rock.

That’s about it for now. Keep an eye out for more updates.

Brought to you by the team that designed London beat haunt Fabric, Matter (Fabric; Matter. Get it?) will be a ‘purpose-built’ space for club nights and live performances and promises cutting edge audio and visual technology to make your viewing/pleasure unsurpassed. Unless you’re watching something really bad.

The venue will open in September and will be hosting The Wombats in November. Which is nice.

Latitude Festival – More Artists Added To Lineup

Posted by Adam Slinger On May - 21 - 2008

Latitude Music Festival

Spring is finally here and with the gorgeous sunshine that familiar festival feeling is starting to take over. The stunning setting of Henham Park on the Sunrise Coast will be the place to be this summer with a weekend full to the brim of watching amazing and exciting bands, hearing some the countries best poetry, listening to a book reading by some incredible authors, taking part in a bespoke theatre production, losing yourself in cabaret, or witnessing fantastic dance compositions on a floating stage on the lake. There’s no other festival quite like Latitude Festival.

The imposing Obelisk Arena will host Brit-award winning folktronic songtress Beth Orton on the Friday at Latitude. Her distinctive vocals and sweet melodies have earned her a career spanning over ten years and seven albums; her eighth will follow towards the end of the year. Her beautiful, quirky voice and her brilliant mix of electronica and folk produced two Mercury Music Award nominations for ‘Trailer Park’ and ‘Central Reservation’ and a Top Ten album with ‘Daybreaker’ spawning such hit singles as ‘She Cried Your Name’ and ‘Stolen Car’. Her renowned live performance will no doubt be a moving and stunning addition to Friday’s festivities.

The hugely influential Belgium quintet Deus are coming to Latitude for the Saturday. These underground heroes have been enjoying a resurgence of late with their fantastic new album ‘Vantage Point’ which showcases their trademark fusion of all types of music, pop, folk, rock, free jazz, neo-prog, punk and heavy metal. They’re one of the most successful and influential Belgian rock bands ever, inspiring the likes of Muse and Radiohead to name but two. An exciting addition to the Obelisk Arena.

Manchester’s cult three-piece I Am Kloot join Saturday’s stellar line-up. Hailed as one of the best songwriters in the country by Pete Doherty and Guy Garvey from Elbow, Johnny Bramwell from I Am Kloot writes fantastically dark and sometimes sinister brooding songs that are compelling and catchy. They’ve been around for over ten years and released five albums and whilst mainstream appreciation eludes them they’re not short of admirers and dedicated followers and are worth checking out on the Obelisk Arena.

Scottish psychedelic pop outfit Aliens, consisting of former members of The Beta Band join the line-up on Friday. Their phenomenal album ‘Astronomy For Dogs’ which came out last year is a upbeat pop/rock record, quite different from the trip-hop of The Beta Band. It spawned the track ‘I Am The Unknown’ which is featured in the recent blockbuster movie ‘21’.

Quirky and indefinable, Leeds quartet Grammatics are making serious waves in the music industry thanks to support slots with The Futureheads and The Pigeon Detectives at a NME Awards show. Their cross-breed of influences from heavy rock and metal to mid-nineties Brit Art Rock and indie dance means their sound is truly their own. It’s winning them fans all over the country and they will no doubt continue their rise to mainstream success. Once again Latitude are bring the very best in up and coming talent.

Over in the Uncut Arena, Guillemots are back with a new album and one of the catchiest singles of the year in ‘Get Over It’. Expect massive singalong choruses from the quirky indie popsters when they take to the stage on the Saturday. The band have toured with the likes of Rufus Wainwright and Snow Patrol and with guitars, keyboards, saxophones and woodwind instruments the Guillemots live experience is never a dull affair. Definitely worth your attention!

One of the hottest bands of the moment, Black Kids, will bring their unique style of danceable disco indie spliced with 80’s pop vibes to the Uncut Arena on the Friday. It has been quite the year for Florida five piece. A breakthrough performance at Popfest in Georgia coincided with demo EP ‘Wizard of Ahhhs’ being posted on the band’s Myspace and Black Kids were unleashed. A flurry of label interest and positive music press followed while the bands live show continued to justify the hype. Debut single ‘I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You’ reached Number 11 in the UK charts and performed the track on the first ever live edition of Later…..with Jools Holland.

Step aside Prince because there is some new funk in town. Essex four piece Magistrates mix Klaxons style beats with funky pop rhythms to create a sound so fresh you won’t even have to shower. Already causing a buzz, the band have supported Top 10 newcomer Sam Sparro and will be ready to impress when they groove into the Uncut Arena on Saturday.

As Latitude is dedicated to bringing the very best in emerging talent, the stunning Sunrise Arena will host a line-up of tomorrow’s stars.

With the release of their imminent second album ‘Nights Out’ landing before the festival Metronomy (Joseph Mount) will undoubtedly be on top form when Latitude hits the Suffolk coast. Originally from Devon and now based in London Metronomy has not only been brought to the public eye with his own material but also as a sought-after remixer for Obelisk headliners Franz Ferdinand, Klaxons and Kate Nash to name only a few. Oscar Cash and Gabriel Stebbing will be joining Joseph Mount on the Sunrise Arena for a set not to be missed.

Latitude welcomes Rosie & The Goldbug who will be showcasing their incredible piano lead harmonies and haunting vocal melodies. The Cornish three piece featuring Rosie (Rosie Vanier), Pixie (Lee Matthews) and Plums (Sarah Morgan) have been described as a ‘Prozac-ingesting mix of Tori Amos, Cabaret’s Sally Bowles…’ and ‘Kate Bush on Crack’!

Latitude Festival

Joining them is the dreamy pop of London trio The Joy Formidable. The newcomers have already had a song featured on an advert for cult show Skins and gigs supporting Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. Let their smooth grooves wash over you on the Friday afternoon.

Irish musician Wallis Bird will be taking to Latitude’s Saturday afternoon line-up, guitar-in-hand to forecast a unique combination of traditional folk music, blues and funk that will be the perfect accompaniment to the Suffolk sunshine. The Daily Star have said her semi-acoustic confessional songs hit the soul hard, but it’s her voice that’ll melt the coldest of hearts. Maybe it’s time for Wallis Bird to melt yours.

Maintaining the traditions of the best in English song writing with a modern freshness and vigour, Godwits are a band that are turning heads and swelling hearts wherever they go with music that reflects the contradictions of life. Indie folk rock at its most intriguing.

Headlining this year’s event on the Obelisk Arena, Scottish art-rock heroes Franz Ferdinand play their only English festival show exclusively at Latitude on the Friday night; the majestic and soaring Icelandic post-rock outfit Sigur Ros head up Saturday’s line-up and New York titans Interpol close the arena on the Sunday with their unique brand of powerful and atmospheric inventive indie rock. Friday night over on the Uncut Arena will see an incredibly special performance from “Africa’s funkiest band” (Evening Standard), the remarkable Amadou and Mariam and throughout the rest of the weekend the Obelisk and Uncut Arenas will host stunning performances from Nick Cave’s Grinderman, the beautiful poetry of Martha Wainwright, epic musicians The Mars Volta, the charming Death Cab for Cutie, the superb Elbow, legendary alt rockers The Breeders, legendary performer Julian Cope and grime, hip-hop, electro pop queen, M.I.A.

But of course, Latitude is so much more than a music festival. This year’s Latitude can boast the exclusive involvement of BAFTA in the Film and Music Arena; a quite astonishing comedy line-up including Omid Djalili, Ross Noble, Frankie Boyle, Rich Hall and Simon Amstell in the Comedy Arena.
The Literary Arena is packed full of top authors including Simon Armitage, Hanif Kureishi and Iain Banks as well as Latitude favourites Vox ‘N’ Roll, WordTheatre and Marcus Brigstocke’s The Early Edition. The National Theatre, Royal Court Theatre, RSC and The Bush all bring exciting new shows to the Theatre Arena. Plus stellar poets Adrian Mitchell, John Hegley and Carol Ann Duffy are all confirmed for the Poetry Arena hosted by Luke Wright. The Cabaret Arena welcomes the ever hilarious and inventive Vauxhallville with plenty more exciting performances to announce in the pipeline. And that’s not to mention the awe-inspiring Sadler’s Wells who will perform their world class dance on a beautiful stage floating in the middle of the lake as will The Irrepressibles with their orchestral brilliance.

Interview with Jim Scalavunos (Grinderman)

Posted by Adam Slinger On May - 21 - 2008

Who are you most looking forward to seeing at this year’s Latitude festival and why?
Grinderman happen to be playing the same day as Interpol, whom I know from NY. Good band: I remember when they used to play tiny Manhattan clubs like Brownies, way back when. I haven’t seen them perform in a long time and I’m really looking forward to seeing them again most of all. It will also be nice to hook up with The Breeders; The Bad Seeds spent an entire summer touring the US with them on the 1994 Lollapalooza.

Grinderman Music Interview

What aspect of Latitude Festival interests you the most and why?
The audience: they seem more easygoing and relaxed than most festival crowds. Not frazzled, like they’ve been engaged in trench warfare for days, rather than enjoying themselves in the outdoors. Latitude seems to attract an interesting diversity of types and ages too.

What can people expect you to bring to the festival
A pink suit and a sturdy umbrella.

…and do you have anything special planned?
Eating ice cream in the sunshine in a sheep meadow – my idea of a good time. Maybe see what’s happening down at the Bimble Inn??

If you weren’t doing this what would you be doing?
I can’t imagine a more pleasurable way to pass a summer’s day.

What is your favourite colour Sheep?

Pink, of course… to match both my suit and drum kit.

Interview with Julian Cope

Posted by Adam Slinger On May - 21 - 2008

Who are you most looking forward to seeing at the Latitude festival and why?
I don’t go to festivals to see anyone in particular. For myself, what makes a festival great is not who you saw but who you missed, as it is evidence that there was so much going on you could not hope to take it all in.

What aspect of Latitude Festival interests you the most and why?
The name of the festival is its most essential aspect, for its title sums up everything about living here in these islands. We are lucky to be in a geographical location where food is guaranteed through our highly temperate climate, and where there is some kind of balance between the sexes.

What can people expect you to bring to the festival, do you have anything special planned?
People can expect a beautiful array of instruments, including 2 Mellotrons and several marching drums plus the strangest percussion rack this side of a Harry Partch composition. There will be epic amplifiers and extremely pretty guitars, plus anecdotes and strange tales. Also, I shall be playing both old and new material at the festival.

If you weren’t doing this what would you be doing?
I’d be researching for my next book, which is a study of the Ancient Law.

What is your favourite colour Sheep?
I’m interested only in the black sheep.

Interview with Sam Isaac

Posted by Adam Slinger On May - 21 - 2008

Sam Isaac will be donning the acoustic guitar once again and playing alongside yet another great lineup of artists as he plays the Latitude Festival on the beautiful suffolk coast. This is what Sam had to say on this year’s Latitude music festival….

Who are you most looking forward to seeing at this year’s Latitude festival and why?
To be honest it’s got to be the big acts on the main stage this year. I think they’re pretty much the best of any festival all summer. Sigur Ros, Death Cab! Getting to see those bands play at such a great festival is one of the things I’m looking forward to most all this summer. Also my good friends Luke Leighfield and Tim and Sam’s Band on the BBC Introducing Stage on Sunday. They’re doing a collaborative set and its going to be amazing.

What aspect of Latitude Festival interests you the most and why?
It’s just so different from any other festival. The beautiful site, the amazing range of both music and literary and comedy stuff. All in such a small site that you can walk across in just a few minutes. It’s much more easy to get around than something like Glastonbury.

What can people expect you to bring to the festival, do you have anything special planned?

I’ll probably just be bringing my six piece indie-pop band. We’ll be playing some new songs and hopefully getting some musician friends that are playing in other bands on stage to sing some gang vocals. It will be great!

If you weren’t doing this what would you be doing?

Recording my album in a hot studio near London Bridge. Probably fretting, worrying if the songs are ok, wishing I was at Latitude.

What is your favourite colour Sheep?

Plain old white. None of these multicoloured new-age ones.
